    Dear S.B. Butler Families,

I want to welcome you and our new families to the 2017-2018 school year!  I hope that everyone feels rested and has enjoyed their summer.  It is a great opportunity to recharge, spend time with each other, and have fun.  I am expecting a smooth start to the school year and I am certainly looking forward to welcoming everyone back on August 31.

A special thank you needs to be extended to our custodial and maintenance staff for all of their efforts preparing the building.  We have several new additions to our teaching staff.  Mr. Jake Sullivan is our new art teacher, Mrs. Marie Johnson is our new reading specialist, Ms. Kristina Carta is new to our fifth grade team, and Mrs. Nancy Anderson has joined us from Charles Barnum as our new, additional Pre School teacher.  We are also excited to welcome new students and families from Pleasant Valley School.

A central focus this year in classrooms will be the continued implementation of the Reading and Writing Workshop.  Teachers and staff will continue to receive professional development in these areas throughout the school year.  I imagine your students will talk about both at home; feel free to contact me with questions at any time.  We will also continue our character education program at Butler this year.  Students will “catch bubbles” for good character and will be recognized during the morning announcements.

Please be sure to look over the adjustment to our student pick up procedure at dismissal.  This year we will continue with our morning recess block.  Please be sure to not drop your student off prior to 8:30 a.m., as there is no supervision.  Breakfast is offered at 8:30 a.m.   Morning recess will continue this year from 8:40-8:55 a.m.

In closing, I’ll remind you that we appreciate all of the support, time, and volunteering that families provide throughout the year.  I thank you all for that!  Teamwork between home and school is very important.  It makes a difference in the success of our students at S.B. Butler Elementary School.  I am looking forward to seeing the students and hearing about their summer adventures!  Enjoy the remainder of your summer vacation.

    In Partnership,

    Mr. Wheeler
