    My country tis of thee
    Sweet land of liberty
    Of thee I sing
    Land where my fathers died
    Land of the pilgrims' pride
    From every mountainside
    Let freedom ring.

If you are willing to share a multicultural dance or song with the vocal music classes, please let Mrs. Olsen know. In fact, if you have a special musical talent that you are willing to share with us, please contact me.    I would love to have you come in and share your expertise with my class (s).   All volunteer work must be coordinated through the Community Coordinator.    Please let me know what you would like to demonstrate before you contact her, though.    Thank you.

  • Patriotic Songs

Posted by Lee Ann Olsen on 8/27/2015
All students at Charles Barnum are required to learn the words to patriotic songs.   First graders start learning "America".   Third graders sing America and learn The Star Spangled Banner by the end of the year.   Fourth graders sing both America and The Star Spangled Banner and learn America The Beautiful.    I have posted the words to these songs at this website in the newsletter.

  • The Star Spangled Banner

Posted by Lee Ann Olsen on 8/27/2015
Oh say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming
And the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say does that star spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

  • America the Beautiful

Oh beautiful for spacious skies for amber waves of grain
For purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain
America, America, God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea

  • Recorders at Charles Barnum

Posted by Lee Ann Olsen on 8/24/2015
All third grade students will be learning how to play the recorder this year.     .   Recorders are assigned to students and kept in the music room at all times.    It helps tremendously if a child can practice at home on a recorder.   Recorders usually cost $10 or less.   I have a few that I loan out every year for children to borrow.   Before the third graders are given recorders to play they must show proficiency in knowing the names of the lines and spaces on the treble clef staff.   That is what we will be studying for the first month of school.       There are five lines on the music staff and four spaces.      A sentence is memorized to help students remember the names of the lines.   Here is the sentence:    Every Good Boy Does Fine.   E for every, G for good, B for boy, D for does, and F for fine.    Count the lines from the bottom line up to the top line.
Spaces:   There are four spaces in the music staff.  A word is memorized to help students remember the names of the spaces.   That word rhymes with space.   The word is FACE.   F is the first space, A is the second space, C is the third space, and E is the fourth space.   We count spaces from the bottom to the top.   A posting will be made here when the recorder study is beginning.   Please check back often.

  • Chorus at Charles Barnum.

Posted by Lee Ann Olsen on 8/27/2014
All fourth and fifth grade students are invited to join chorus.
Chorus contracts will be sent home for parents to sign and once they are returned your child will become a member of the chorus.  We meet once a week for 45 minutes in the music room. This is on Mondays from 1:40- 2:25 pm.   Chorus members will remain in chorus for the entire school year.   We have two concerts each year;  a December winter concert, and a spring concert.  We also have a Veteran's Day performance and sometimes a Flag Day performance.    A new student to Charles Barnum may join chorus at any time up to 3 weeks of performance time.
